Italian archbishop denies church helped Nazi fugitives
Sunday, 10 August 2003

GENOA, Italy, Aug 10 (AFP) - The archbishop of Genoa said on Sunday that he had opened an enquiry into allegations that another cleric had covered up for Nazi fugitives between 1946 and 1951.

Tarcisio Bertone denied claims made by a local daily newspaper, Secolo XIX, that former cardinal Giuseppe Siri had covered up for Nazis fleeing to Argentina after World War II.

Earlier this year the newspaper used freshly declassified Argentine documents to show how top Nazi officials, including Adolf Eichmann, Joseph Mengele, Klaus Barbie and Erich Priebke, fled Europe via Genoa using fake passports.

Bertone said that the church would publish the enquiry's findings at a later date.
